SECOND-HAND SPECTRES

Moving Image Installation. 7min. 2022.

SECOND HAND SPECTRES is a montage created by filming a laptop screen from an android phone, recording and re-recording footage sent/received over WhatsApp. The resulting video is a visual narrative of protest, community, and resistance in present-day India. Insurgent footage is stitched together, trespassing in-between digital and physical spaces, simultaneously running both from and towards the police.

The film slips between images of collapse, revolt, popular culture and police oppression, using an affective dialectical approach to highlight the role of camera-phones as nomadic witnesses, especially in the context of a country grappling with systemic marginalisation.

Documentation from a screening at Iklectik Lab, London, in October 2023.
